Your options at a glance

Marco Polo airport (VCE) lies on the mainland, not in the lagoon. Three options take you to the old town: the ATVO express bus to Piazzale Roma, the Alilaguna boat, and a water taxi. Piazzale Roma is the bus and car hub at the edge of the city. From there you walk, or take a vaporetto (water bus) on the Grand Canal.

For most visitors, the bus is the best value and the boat is the most scenic. The water taxi is the fastest door-to-door option if you travel in a group.

ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma

The cheapest and simplest option.

Where to board

The ATVO stop is near exit D. The bus takes about 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma. A separate stop serves Mestre. Luggage is included in the fare.

Fare

The fare in summer 2026 was €12 one way and €20 return. ATVO decided a tariff update from 1 September 2026, and the new price was not available when this page was written. Plan on about €12 and check at the ticket desk.

At Piazzale Roma

The ATVO station and ticket desk are at Piazzale Roma. From there, the vaporetto lines 1 and 2 go along the Grand Canal. Piazzale Roma also has three 24-hour car garages. See getting around Venice.

Alilaguna boat

Alilaguna runs scheduled boats from the airport pier across the lagoon. It is slower than the bus but you arrive by water. The Blue line serves Murano, Fondamente Nove, the Lido, the Arsenale, San Zaccaria, San Marco Giardinetti, Zattere, Giudecca, Tronchetto and the station. The Orange line goes via Madonna dell'Orto, San Stae, Rialto and Ca' Rezzonico. A Red line runs in summer.

Fares on the Alilaguna site in October 2026: airport to Venice €18 one way and €32 return. Airport to Murano costs €10 one way and €18 return. Time passes cost €40 for 24 hours, €60 for 48 hours and €80 for 72 hours, available at counters only.

You may bring one large suitcase and one piece of hand luggage. Each additional piece costs €4. Children up to age 6 travel free.

Water taxi

Fast and expensive, but cheap when shared by a group.

Price per boat

The reported fixed fare from the airport to the old town is €110 per boat for up to four people, with a €10 night surcharge from 10 pm to 6 am. Online providers quoted about €140 to €160 in September 2026. Plan on €110 to €160 and confirm the price when you book.

When it makes sense

For a group of four with luggage, a water taxi can cost about the same per person as the Alilaguna return. It can also drop you at a hotel's water entrance.

Shared taxis

Some providers sell shared transfers from around €39 per person. These are commercial offers, not an official tariff.

Arriving at Treviso airport

Low-cost flights sometimes land here instead.

ATVO line 351 runs from Treviso airport to Mestre station in about 30 minutes and to Piazzale Roma in about 40 minutes. Since 10 August 2026 the line uses a new route via the motorway, and a new timetable has applied since 29 September 2026. The old travel time of about 1 hour 10 minutes no longer applies. The fare after the tariff update is not confirmed, so check with ATVO.

If you arrive by train, Venezia Santa Lucia station lies directly on the Grand Canal. Mestre is the mainland station, with trains to Santa Lucia every 10 to 15 minutes, according to a secondary source. Check the timetable on the day. Piazzale Roma and the station are outside the 2026 access fee area. See the access fee guide for 2027.
