The Rialto Bridge at a glance
The Rialto Bridge crosses the Grand Canal, the main waterway of Venice. It is a popular photo spot and gets crowded, especially around midday. The Rialto market is close by.
This page sticks to what you can use on the day: the stop, the market and the canal itself. We do not give the bridge's date or measurements, as we could not confirm them from a reliable source for this guide.

How to get to Rialto
By water bus or on foot.
By vaporetto
Line 1 stops at Rialto and calls at almost every stop along the Grand Canal. From Piazzale Roma it takes about 22 minutes. A single ticket costs โฌ9.50 and is valid for 75 minutes.
Tickets and passes โLine 2
Line 2 is the faster line, at about 16 minutes from Piazzale Roma according to one Italian guide. We could not confirm from official sources that line 2 stops at Rialto, so check the stop on the timetable.
On foot
Venice has no cars, so every route on land is a walk. Use a map app, and allow extra time at busy hours, as the lanes near the bridge fill up.
From St. Mark's
Line 1 also stops near St. Mark's, at Vallaresso and San Zaccaria, so you can ride the canal between the two. Combine them in one day.

The Rialto fish market
The fish market, the Pescheria, is part of the Rialto market. According to an excerpt from the Venezia Unica website, it is open Tuesday to Saturday from 7 am to 2 pm and closed on Sunday and Monday. We did not check the detail page ourselves, so confirm the hours locally before you plan a trip around them.
The fruit and vegetable market, the Erbaria, is also nearby. Its hours were unclear in our sources, so we do not list them.
Plan your visit around the time of day. The bridge is usually calmer in the morning than at midday, and if you arrive early you also see the market at work. From the water, a ride in the late afternoon is worth it, when the light is lower. You do not need to reserve anything for the Rialto itself: there is no ticket or time slot.
The market opens early. If you want to see it working, go in the morning and arrive before the day's crowds do. Remember that you are in a working market: stay out of the way of traders and carts, and ask before you photograph stalls.

The Grand Canal
The best way to see Venice's main street is from the water.
The Grand Canal winds through the city, with palaces and churches on both banks, and St. Mark's at its southern end. We could not confirm its length or width from a reliable source, so we leave those out.
| Way to see it | Cost (2026) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Vaporetto line 1 | โฌ9.50 single, or a pass | A slow ride with almost all stops |
| Vaporetto line 2 | โฌ9.50 single, or a pass | A faster ride |
| Gondola traghetto | About โฌ2 per person, cash | A short crossing of 2 to 5 minutes |
| Gondola ride | โฌ90 per boat by day, โฌ110 at night | A private sightseeing ride |
The traghetto fare comes from travel websites, not an official price list, so treat it as a guide. For the gondola tariff and how it works, read our gondola guide.
Behaviour on the bridge
The steps and the bridge are public space and also a place where people cross to get to work. Do not stop in the middle of a flow of people to take a photo. Step to the side, keep moving and keep your bag in front of you.
Venice has rules against sitting or eating on bridges, steps and quays, and fines in the three-digit range are reported, along with removal from the area. Official amounts were not available to us, so take it as a general warning rather than a specific rule. Sit in a cafe or on a bench instead.
