The fixed fare in 2026

A gondola ride in Venice is priced by the boat. The city sets the tariff, so every gondolier at an official stop should quote the same amount. The figures below come from the municipal gondola service page, whose current tariff dates from a 2023 city council decision and was still shown in 2026.

The price covers the whole boat, not each passenger. Up to five people can sit in one gondola. Split between five, the daytime ride works out at €18 per person. For two people it is €45 each.

Venice gondola price: day, night and extra time

What the official tariff says, and what it does not.

Time of dayHoursDurationPrice per boat (2026)Passengers
Day9 am to 7 pmAbout 30 min€90Up to 5
Evening and night7 pm to 4 amAbout 35 min€110Up to 5

The duration can vary by a few minutes because of boat traffic, the tide and the weather. If you want a different length, the tariff says the price is calculated in proportion to the time. Some websites list a fixed surcharge for each extra 20 minutes, but those amounts come from non-official pages and differ from one source to the next. Agree the total price for the longer ride with the gondolier before you step in.

Singing or live music is not part of the base tariff. We could not confirm what it costs, so ask first and settle the amount in advance.

Street tariff or online booking

You can hire a gondola directly from a gondolier at a stop, or book a ride online. They are not the same product.

Online listings often offer a shared gondola, where you pay per person. In our research these started at roughly €31 to €39 each, and private boats from about €120 per boat. These are offers from tour sellers, not the municipal tariff, and prices change with the season and the time of day.

  • Street hire: the fixed tariff above, pay the gondolier, no booking needed.
  • Shared online ride: lower price per person, but you share the boat with strangers and may have a fixed meeting time.
  • Private online ride: check what is included and how long it lasts before you pay.

Whichever you choose, check the duration and whether the price is per person or per boat.

Tips for a good ride

Small decisions that make the money worth it.

Agree before boarding

Ask for the price, the length of the ride and the number of passengers, and confirm it matches the tariff. Pay at the end, as agreed.

Share the boat

Because the price is per boat, a group of four or five pays far less each than a couple does.

Choose the time

Daytime is cheaper by €20. Evening rides cost €110 but last five minutes longer. The fare changes at 7 pm.

Plan the rest of the day

A ride takes about half an hour. Fit it between sights, and see the full route in our one-day guide.

The €2 alternative: the traghetto

A traghetto is a simple gondola ferry that crosses the Grand Canal at a few points where there is no bridge nearby. The crossing takes roughly two to five minutes.

According to travel websites, the fare is around €2 per person for non-residents, paid in cash to the gondolier. We could not check the official price list, so treat that amount as a guide. The public transport operator also sells a carnet of 10 traghetto tickets for €10 at Venezia Unica sales points.

A traghetto is not a sightseeing ride. It is a short, cheap way to cross the canal and get onto the water. For a proper tour on the Grand Canal, a vaporetto is the better value.

Gondola ride in Venice: frequently asked questions

How much does a gondola ride in Venice cost?

The official tariff is €90 per boat for about 30 minutes between 9 am and 7 pm, and €110 for about 35 minutes between 7 pm and 4 am. The tariff dates from a 2023 city decision and was still listed in 2026.

Is the price per person?

No. It is per gondola, for up to five passengers. Online shared rides are priced per person, but they are a different, commercial offer.

How long does a gondola ride last?

About 30 minutes by day and 35 minutes at night. Traffic, tide and weather can change this by a few minutes.

Can I ride for longer?

Yes. Longer rides are charged in proportion to the time, but agree the total price with the gondolier before you start.

Is there a cheaper way onto a gondola?

The traghetto crossing of the Grand Canal costs around €2 per person according to travel websites. It is a short ferry hop, not a sightseeing tour.

Do I need to book a gondola?

Not for the street tariff: you can hire a boat at a stop. Online booking makes sense if you want a fixed time, a shared ride or a serenade.
