Venice tours: four types worth comparing

Most Venice tours fall into four groups: skip-the-line guided visits of the big sights, gondola rides (shared or private), boat trips to Murano and Burano, and city walks. This page does not name tour operators and does not list tour prices. It helps you decide which type fits your day and what to read in the description.

Some rules apply to every guided tour. Since 1 August 2024 a guided group may have at most 25 people in the old town and on Murano, Burano and Torcello. Children up to 2 years do not count, and school groups are exempt. Guides may not use loudspeakers or megaphones. Smaller groups are therefore normal, and a guide with a headset or a quiet voice is part of the experience.

What to check in every tour description

Descriptions differ. These points decide whether a tour is good value.

Tickets included or not

The Doge's Palace has no single ticket. You need the St. Mark's Square Museums ticket (โ‚ฌ35 in 2026, โ‚ฌ30 online more than 30 days ahead). St. Mark's Basilica starts at โ‚ฌ10 and sells timed slots. Check whether a tour price covers the entry.

Doge's Palace โ†’

Dress code and bags

In the Basilica shoulders and knees must be covered. Bags larger than 40 x 30 x 20 cm and trolleys are not allowed. This applies to guided groups too.

St. Mark's Basilica โ†’

The official gondola fare

The city sets โ‚ฌ90 for 30 minutes by day and โ‚ฌ110 for 35 minutes at night, per boat, with up to five people. Gondola rides sold online are commercial offers and do not have to match this fare. Compare the length and the number of people.

Gondola ride โ†’

Access fee days

In 2027 day trippers pay an access fee on 72 days from 26 March to 15 August, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with a maximum of โ‚ฌ10. Check whether a tour mentions the fee, because the 2027 rules are not final.

Time on the islands

Burano is 40 to 45 minutes by line 12 from Fondamente Nove. A boat tour that includes Murano and Burano should say how long you stay on each island.

Cancellation

Look for free cancellation or rebooking. Rain, high water or a missed slot can change the plan.

Tour or on your own?

The honest trade-offs.

Pros of a tour

No queue for a ticket, someone who explains what you see and a fixed meeting point. It helps most on a short stay or with older relatives.

Cons of a tour

The day is fixed, and groups slow down on narrow bridges. Many sights can be seen alone with a timed ticket.

Pros of going alone

You choose the pace. A 24-hour pass costs โ‚ฌ25, and Murano and Burano are included in the time passes. A single ticket is โ‚ฌ9.50 for 75 minutes.

Vaporetto tickets โ†’

Cons of going alone

You book the timed tickets yourself and read the timetables. Burano and Torcello take planning.

Venice tours: frequently asked questions

Are Venice tours worth it?

For the Basilica and the Doge's Palace, often yes, because a guide adds context and fixes your time slot. For the islands and the Grand Canal, you can go alone by vaporetto.

How big can a tour group be?

At most 25 people since 1 August 2024. Children up to 2 years are not counted, and school groups are exempt.

Is a gondola tour cheaper than the official fare?

Not always. The official fare is โ‚ฌ90 for 30 minutes per boat. Online offers are commercial and can be priced per person, so compare length and group size.

Do tours include the Doge's Palace ticket?

Some do, some do not. The palace has no single ticket, so read whether the St. Mark's Square Museums ticket is part of the price.

Do tours avoid the access fee?

No, not automatically. On fee days in 2027, day trippers pay the fee. Guests who stay overnight in Venice are exempt but need proof.
