Venice in one day: what is realistic
Venice rewards a plan. The old town is small, but the main sights are far apart in time because of queues, bridges and boats. One day is enough for the Grand Canal, the Rialto, St. Mark's Square and one museum. It is not enough for the islands as well. Choose one of the two.
Start early. The fee hours end at 4:30 pm, but the queues are shortest in the first hour after the sights open. Before you go, check whether your date is a fee day. In 2026 the access fee ended on 26 July. For 2027 the city set 72 days from 26 March to 15 August, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with a maximum of โฌ10. Dates, exemptions and the booking portal are still to be decided, and the portal had not opened by mid-October 2026.

A realistic route for one day
Book the Basilica slot and the Doge's Palace ticket before you travel.
Morning: station to Rialto
Arrive at Santa Lucia station and take vaporetto line 1 along the Grand Canal. Piazzale Roma to Rialto takes about 22 minutes on line 1 and about 16 on line 2. If it is Tuesday to Saturday, visit the Rialto fish market before it closes at 2 pm.
Rialto Bridge โLate morning: St. Mark's Basilica
Walk to the square for your booked slot. Mon to Sat the basilica is open from 9:30 am; on Sundays it opens at 2 pm. Cover shoulders and knees, and leave large bags behind, since nothing above 40 x 30 x 20 cm is allowed.
St. Mark's Basilica โMidday: lunch away from the square
Walk a few streets away from the square before you eat. Prices near the square are usually higher.
Afternoon: the Doge's Palace
The โฌ35 ticket also covers the Museo Correr and the Archaeological Museum. A ticket without a fixed time is valid for the palace from 12 noon. The palace is open until 7 pm until 31 October, and until 6 pm from 1 November.
Doge's Palace โLate afternoon: Dorsoduro or the Campanile
Walk to the Accademia bridge and the Zattere for a quieter hour, or take the Campanile lift (โฌ15, 30 to 40 minutes) for the view. Decide by the weather.
What to leave out
Do not add a gondola ride, a second museum and an island to the same day. A traghetto across the Grand Canal costs about โฌ2 and gives you a short boat ride for much less than a gondola (official fare โฌ90 for 30 minutes per boat).
Gondola ride โEvening: back to the station
Line 2 is the faster boat back. Allow time for the train, because boats are slower than the map suggests.

Venice day trip: how to get there and what to plan
The practical side of a day trip.
By train
Santa Lucia station sits on the Grand Canal. Trains run between Mestre and Santa Lucia every 10 to 15 minutes according to a secondary source, so check the timetable.
From the airport
The ATVO bus costs about โฌ12 and takes 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma. The Alilaguna boat costs โฌ18. From Treviso airport the bus reaches Piazzale Roma in 40 minutes.
From the airport โBy car
Park at Tronchetto or Piazzale Roma, or in Mestre if you want to spend less on parking. Prices change, so check before you go.
Fee days and day trippers
In 2026 the station, Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto were outside the fee area. Whether the same applies in 2027 is still open. Most 2027 fee days are Fridays to Sundays plus holidays, so a weekday visit often avoids the fee. The long phases are 23 April to 2 May and 28 May to 6 June.
Access fee โTickets for the boats
A single vaporetto ticket costs โฌ9.50 for 75 minutes. If you ride three times or more, the 24-hour pass at โฌ25 is cheaper.
Getting around โIf you prefer the islands
Swap the afternoon for Murano and Burano. Burano is 40 to 45 minutes from Fondamente Nove. That leaves time for only one sight in the centre, so choose between them.

Venice in one day: frequently asked questions
Is one day enough for Venice?
For the centre, yes. You can do the Grand Canal, the Rialto, St. Mark's and one museum. The islands take another half day.
Do I have to pay the access fee on a day trip?
Only on fee days. In 2027 these are 72 days from 26 March to 15 August, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with a maximum of โฌ10. Details are still to be decided.
What should I book in advance?
The Basilica slot, the Doge's Palace ticket and, if you want it, the Campanile. Booking the palace online more than 30 days ahead costs โฌ30 instead of โฌ35.
How do I get around on a day trip?
Mostly on foot, plus one or two vaporetto rides. Line 1 runs the Grand Canal, line 2 is faster.
Where do I leave my luggage?
Bring as little as possible. Large bags are not allowed in the Basilica, and trolleys are banned there.
